In the Wine Light<\/a> is International Cabernet Day<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>This wine holiday is celebrated on the Thursday before Labor Day.\u00a0 <\/span>In 2021, that falls on September 2nd<\/strong>, but it can occur in late August or early September depending on the year.<\/p>\n

So, is Cabernet Day for Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, or both?\u00a0 <\/span>It seems that most folks celebrate Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong> on this day, but we don\u2019t see any reason why we can\u2019t celebrate Cabernet Franc too.\u00a0 <\/span>After all, without Cabernet Franc<\/strong> crossing with Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong>, we wouldn\u2019t have Cabernet Sauvignon!<\/p>\n

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most widely planted and noble wine grapes in all the world.\u00a0 <\/span>It typically bud breaks later, so it isn\u2019t subject to as many issues with the late spring frosts we see here in North Carolina.\u00a0 <\/span>Due to the later bud break, it\u2019s often one of the last grapes to be harvested, but it can also struggle to get to optimal ripeness.<\/p>\n

Cabs are often known for being full bodied with big tannins.\u00a0 <\/span>Old World Cabernets and those we find on the East Coast tend to be softer and more delicate.\u00a0 <\/span>Both have should have their place in your wine rack.<\/p>\n

There are many delightful Cabernet Sauvignons in the state.\u00a0 <\/span>Just a few of our favorite include (but not limited to) Cabs from Overmountain Vineyards<\/a>, Jones von Drehle Vineyards and Winery<\/a>, Laurel Gray Vineyards<\/a>, South Creek Vineyards and Winery<\/a>, and Hanover Park Vineyard<\/a>.<\/p>\n
