{"id":562,"date":"2015-05-04T22:25:18","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T02:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncwineguys.com\/?p=562"},"modified":"2024-04-21T15:59:40","modified_gmt":"2024-04-21T19:59:40","slug":"virginia-adventures-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ncwineguys.com\/index.php\/virginia-adventures-day-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Adventures Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Day three brought us to familiar wineries once again. \u00a0These were the wineries that we marked on our &#8220;go back to&#8221; list. \u00a0We were in the northern part of Virginia with Winchester as our base. \u00a0All of the wineries were within an hour drive from Winchester and if you were to drive the whole circuit without stopping, it would only take about three hours. \u00a0We made our way to a fair number of wineries. \u00a0Below are the notes of our journey. \u00a0The next time you&#8217;re in the area, you should make it a point to check out these great wineries.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otiumcellars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Otium Cellars<\/a>. \u00a0They specialize in more German style wines, but also have some familiar varietals. \u00a0Of interest here are the 2013 Chardonnay and the 2013 Blaufr\u00e4nkisch. \u00a0The grapes they use for the Chardonnay are an Alsace clone, which really bring out the acidity. \u00a0They age half of the wine in new oak and the other in stainless steel. \u00a0The blend brings a nice even flavor with a rich complexity. \u00a0Blaufr\u00e4nkisch is also known as Lemburger, which makes a fruity yet spicy wine. \u00a0The 2013 displayed a great nose full of fresh red fruits and cranberries with a slightly hoppy note. \u00a0The flavors are light and even with a well-rounded finish.<\/p>\n<p>Stop two brought us to <a href=\"http:\/\/boxwoodwinery.com\/ageverify.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boxwood Estate Winery<\/a>. \u00a0Boxwood specializes in red blends, specifically of the Bordeaux variety. \u00a0However, they regularly produce a ros\u00e9 and with freshly planted Sauvignon Blanc, a white is on the horizon. \u00a0All of the reds here are similar in composition yet greatly differ when you compare them to each other. \u00a0At the time they had a 2008 Boxwood and a 2009 Topiary that drank really well. \u00a0The 08 Boxwood is a Cabernet Sauvignon blend with a touch of Merlot and Petit Verdot. \u00a0For approaching 7 years, this wine is still remarkably dark in color. \u00a0The nose was smoky with a deep and satisfying aroma. \u00a0The smoke carried through to the flavor and rounded out with a touch of chalk. \u00a0The 09 Topiary is a Merlot blend with a bit of Cabernet Franc and Malbec added. \u00a0The wine was rich in color and aroma with a smooth and earthy flavor profile.<\/p>\n<p>Stop number three was <a href=\"http:\/\/pearmundcellars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pearmund Cellars<\/a>. \u00a0Pearmund is the oldest Chardonnay vineyard in Virginia with their oldest vines going back at least thirty years. \u00a0Of course the Chardonnay they produce is quite delicious. \u00a0We sampled the 2011 Old Vine Chardonnay which was toasty yet well-balanced between oak, toast and butter. \u00a0The flavors were equally balanced with a crisp acidity and great fruit flavors. \u00a0We would also recommend the 2013 Viognier. \u00a0This wine had a creamy nose with a slight hint of butter. \u00a0The flavors were delicate with a light tropical note throughout.<\/p>\n<p>For stop four, we made our way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcwinery.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Carter Winery of Virginia<\/a>. \u00a0We enjoyed the new 2013 Rose Well, a ros\u00e9 of Merlot that was allowed to sit on the sinks for an extra two days after pressing. \u00a0The color was darker than most ros\u00e9 wines but had a nose that was distinctively Merlot with all the spice and woody notes one would expect. \u00a0The flavors were light and easy with a hint of baking spices on the finish. \u00a0We were also able to taste the 1762, their port style offering. \u00a0This wine is 100% Chambourcin that was aged in bourbon barrels. \u00a0The rich flavors were robust and had a lingering chocolate finish.<\/p>\n<p>Our last stop for the day took us to <a href=\"http:\/\/delaplanecellars.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delaplane Cellars<\/a>. \u00a0Perched high up on the hillside, Delaplane Cellars overlooks the scenic Virginia By-Way and has a great view of the surrounding mountains. \u00a0We sampled six great wines. \u00a0The 2013 Barrel Chardonnay was aged in neutral oak which imparted a light oak nose and a delicate flavor.
