off NC Wine Month in Western North Carolina"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To start off our NC Wine Month celebrations, we decided to make a trip out to vineyards in far western North Carolina.\u00a0 How far west?\u00a0 Well, at one of the vineyards, you can see Tennessee and Georgia as well as North Carolina.\u00a0 That&#8217;s right, we made a trip out to the wineries out in Murphy, Andrews, and a surprise visit to Robbinsville.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making our way to Murphy, NC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a Vineyards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From our home base in Mooresville, our first stop at <a href=\"https:\/\/nottelywine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nottley River Vineyards<\/a> in Murphy, NC was about 4 hours away.\u00a0 We took off early, made a quick stop for lunch, and made it to Nottley River Vineyards not too long after they opened.\u00a0 There was already a good crowd there when we drove in, so we made our way to the tasting bar.\u00a0 After the formal tasting, Steve took us out to the crush pad and gave us a sneak peek of the 2016 releases (which was a stellar year).\u00a0 Most of these will be ready in Spring 2019, so we&#8217;ll be making a return visit for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 Room<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferncrestwinery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FernCrest Winery<\/a> in Andrews, NC.\u00a0 This was our first visit to FernCrest and we had a great time.\u00a0 Co-owner Jan Olson guided us through our tasting.\u00a0 They have a small vineyard of their own, but also buy fruit from across the state and elsewhere.\u00a0 One interesting fact is that each of their wines are named after a different fern, and each label has a drawing of that fern.\u00a0 The white wines we tasted had a great acidity and will be perfect with some early fall foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ncwineguys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/img_2087.jpg?fit=1024%2C768\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" Cellars<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calaboosecellars.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calaboose Cellars<\/a> is just a few blocks away from FernCrest.\u00a0 This winery is officially the state&#8217;s smallest self-contained winery, measuring in at about 300 square feet for the whole operation.\u00a0 They focus on producing small batch wines that are very well crafted and fruit forward. This wine went through partial malolactic fermentation.\u00a0 It had a mellow nose of stone fruits.\u00a0 The palate was rich in minerals with a flinty finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015 Chardonnay<\/strong> &#8211; This Chardonnay is Chablis style meaning all stainless steel and no oak.\u00a0 Green apple, fresh acids and a nice overall fruit profile were present on this wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dry Rose<\/strong> &#8211; A blend of Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.\u00a0 Watermelon and red fruits came through on the nose.\u00a0 Nice acids, mild strawberry and a rounder profile were present on the palate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015 War Woman Red<\/strong> &#8211; This blend of both Cabernets had an herbaceous nose.\u00a0 The flavors were light with strong acids and slightly twiggy tannins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015 Chardonell<\/strong> &#8211; This off-dry wine was filled with big yellow apples, nice acids and a mildly sweet profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2015 Riesling<\/strong> &#8211; This semi-sweet Riesling had a floral nose mixed with apricots and wet stones.\u00a0 Overall fruit forward and well rounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pre-Release Tastings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016 Oaked Chardonnel<\/strong> &#8211; Aged in Hungarian oak, this wine had a very nice oak presence.\u00a0 Grapey acids came through on the palate with excellent fruit character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016 Chardonnay<\/strong> &#8211; Aged in Hungarian and American oak, toasty vanilla clearly came through on the aroma.\u00a0 No malolactic fermentation means this wine has great green apple notes with crisp acids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2016 Cabernet Franc<\/strong> &#8211; This wine had a classic cabernet franc nose with light pepper gracing the aroma.\u00a0 Green and White peper came through on the finish and were supported by a bright cherry profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017 Seyval Blanc<\/strong> &#8211; This bubbly wine was nice and effervescent.\u00a0 The nose was slightly slightly foxy with wile grape flavors balanced by a nice acidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FernCrest Winery<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Royal White<\/strong>\u00a0(Vidal Blanc) &#8211; This wine had a nice floral nose with subtle white fruits.\u00a0 The flavors were nice and acidic with an overall pleasing profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Southern Lady White<\/strong>\u00a0(Chardonnel) &#8211; The nose was of lemon cream.\u00a0 The flavors were bright with citrus lemon and very zesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mountain Holly Red<\/strong>\u00a0(Bordeaux Blend) &#8211; The nose was of tomato jam and figs.\u00a0 Red fruits came through on the palate with gentle tannins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mountainwood Red<\/strong>\u00a0(Cynthiana) &#8211; The color on this wine was incredibly dark. Baking spices and dark fruits came through on the nose.\u00a0 Big acids came through on the palate with a smooth overall profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fiddlehead Red<\/strong> &#8211; This slightly sweet red blend had a great fruit forward profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Black Lady<\/strong> &#8211; This dessert wine of blackberry and blueberry was nicely balanced.\u00a0 It was only mildly sweet with a great fruity profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calaboose Cellars<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017 Seyval Blanc<\/strong> &#8211; Pleasing apricot and mild fruits came through on this mildly sweet white wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017 Norton<\/strong> &#8211; This was dark and inky. Having gone through malolactic fermentation, it imparted a jammy flavor with a slightly acidic profile. Not yet released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017 Chambourcin<\/strong> &#8211; This wine had a classic Chambourcin profile with light baking spices.\u00a0 Being off-dry, it highlighted the red fruit flavors with an overall smooth profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sparkling Niagara<\/strong> &#8211; The grapey nose was unmistakably Niagara grapes.\u00a0 The flavors were not too sweet with a nice fruity balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2017 Catawba<\/strong> &#8211; Fresh acids and a great grapey profile made this wine very easy to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Revinoors Red<\/strong> &#8211; This wine made from the Sunbelt grape is brightly colored with an overall foxy profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wehrloom<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dry County Dry<\/strong> &#8211; This mead was very herbaceous with a nice and mellow overall profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Home Sweet Home<\/strong> &#8211; This mead was made from sourwood honey.
